Haydn’s second large-scale oratorio (first performed in 1801) is based on a long Georgic poem by the eighteenth-century Scottish poet, James Thomson. Haydn’s virtuosic interpretation, which is suffused with the enlightened natural philosophy of the times, is a marvellously varied and painterly piece that the composer himself described as nothing less than ‘outstanding’.
